Please read this guide completely before lighting your COSLIGN candle for the first time. Following these instructions ensures the best experience and keeps you, your home, and your loved ones safe.
Before You Light
Trim the wick before every single burn. Trim to 6mm (approximately a quarter inch) before each use. A wick longer than this produces a larger flame, excessive soot, uneven burning, and a shortened candle life. Use a wick trimmer, sharp scissors, or carefully pinch off the mushroomed tip of the wick with a tissue.
The first burn is the most important burn. On your very first use, allow the candle to burn until the entire top surface of wax has melted to a full, even pool reaching the edges of the jar. For a 7oz two-wick candle this takes approximately 2 hours. Extinguishing the candle before this happens causes tunnelling the wax burns straight down the centre while the sides remain solid and wasted, permanently reducing your candle's burn life.
Inspect the candle before use. If the jar is chipped, cracked, or damaged in any way, do not light the candle. Contact us at hello@coslign.com with a photograph within 48 hours of receiving your order.
Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Always place your candle on a heat-resistant, flat, stable surface before lighting. Do not place on wood, plastic, painted surfaces, fabric, or anything that could be damaged by heat. A ceramic tile, stone coaster, or glass plate is ideal.
While Burning
Never leave a burning candle unattended. This is the most important safety rule. Never leave a lit COSLIGN candle in a room without someone present. Extinguish the candle before leaving the room or going to sleep.
Keep away from flammable materials. Maintain a clear space of at least 30cm around your burning candle. Keep away from curtains, paper, books, fabric, clothing, plants, and any flammable or heat-sensitive items.
Keep out of reach of children and pets. Always place your candle in a location that is completely inaccessible to children under 12 and pets. Never leave children or pets unsupervised in a room with a burning candle.
Never burn for more than 4 continuous hours. Burning a candle for longer than 4 hours causes the glass jar to overheat, increases carbon build-up on the wick, degrades the fragrance quality, and may cause the jar to crack. After 4 hours, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely, trim the wick, and relight.
Avoid drafts and air movement. Do not burn your candle under a ceiling fan, near an open window, near an air conditioning vent, or in any area with moving air. Air movement causes uneven burning, excess sooting, and flickering that can cause wax splatter.
Do not move a burning candle. Never attempt to move or reposition a candle while it is lit or while the wax is still liquid. The hot liquid wax can spill and cause burns or fire. Wait until the wax has fully solidified before moving.
Do not use water to extinguish. Never pour water onto a burning candle to extinguish it. This can cause the hot wax to splatter, potentially causing burns or fire, and may crack the glass jar.
Use a candle snuffer or lid. To extinguish your candle, use the wooden lid that comes with your COSLIGN candle, or a dedicated candle snuffer. Place it over the flame until it is fully extinguished. If using the lid, remove it once the flame is out to prevent the wick from absorbing excess fragrance or moisture.
Do not burn in an enclosed space without ventilation. Always ensure the room has adequate ventilation when burning candles. While COSLIGN candles are made from non-toxic soy wax, burning any candle in a completely sealed, unventilated space is not advisable.
When to Stop Burning
Stop at 10mm of remaining wax. Never burn your COSLIGN candle down to the base of the jar. When approximately 10mm (1cm) of wax remains at the bottom, the candle has reached the end of its life. Continuing to burn beyond this point causes the glass to overheat, can damage the surface it is placed on, and in rare cases may cause the jar to crack or break.
The 10mm rule is non-negotiable for safety.
Pet Safety
COSLIGN candles are formulated to be pet-safe. Our soy wax blend is non-toxic and our fragrance compounds are selected with safety in mind. However, the following guidelines apply when pets are present in the home:
-
Never leave a burning candle unattended in a room where pets are present and unsupervised.
-
Keep burning candles out of reach of animals who may brush against, knock over, or investigate the flame.
-
Cats are particularly sensitive to certain essential oils. While our candles use fragrance compounds rather than raw essential oils, we recommend burning in a room with good ventilation and monitoring your pet's behaviour when introducing a new scent.
-
If your pet displays any signs of distress, coughing, sneezing, or unusual behaviour while a candle is burning, extinguish the candle and move the pet to fresh air immediately. Contact a veterinarian if symptoms persist.
-
Dogs and cats should never be left alone with a burning candle. Wagging tails, curious paws, and brushing bodies can knock over a candle.
If Something Goes Wrong- Emergency Guidance
If hot wax spills on skin: Do not try to wipe or rub off hot wax immediately as this can spread the burn. Cool the area immediately with cool (not cold or ice) running water for at least 10–20 minutes. Do not apply butter, oil, or any home remedy. Seek medical attention if the burn is larger than the size of your palm, if it blisters, or if it affects the face, hands, feet, or joints.
If the candle catches fire beyond a normal flame: Do not use water. Smother the flame by covering the jar with a metal lid or fireproof object if it is safe to do so. If the fire spreads beyond the candle, evacuate the area and call emergency services immediately. Never attempt to carry a burning object.
If the glass jar cracks while burning: Extinguish the flame immediately by smothering with a fireproof lid. Do not attempt to pick up the cracked jar while it is hot or while wax is still liquid. Allow to cool completely before handling. Dispose of the jar following the glass disposal guidance below.
If a child ingests wax: COSLIGN candles are made from non-toxic soy wax. If a child ingests a small amount of soy wax, it is unlikely to cause harm as soy wax is generally considered non-toxic when ingested in small quantities. However, contact the National Poison Control Centre of India (1800-116-117, toll free) immediately and seek medical advice. Take the candle with you or photograph the ingredient label.
If a pet ingests wax: Contact your veterinarian immediately. Bring the candle or take a photograph of the ingredients list to share with the vet.
If wax gets in the eyes: Do not rub the eyes. Flush with clean, room-temperature water for 15–20 minutes. Seek medical attention.
How to Safely Discard the Wax
When your COSLIGN candle reaches the 10mm mark and is no longer safe to burn, here is how to remove and discard the remaining wax safely.
Method 1 — Freezer method (recommended): Place the candle jar in the freezer for 1–2 hours. The wax will contract and shrink away from the sides of the jar. Once frozen, use a butter knife or blunt utensil to gently pop out the wax disc. It should come out cleanly in one or two pieces.
Method 2, Hot water method: Pour a small amount of hot (not boiling) water into the jar. The wax will loosen and float to the surface as it cools. Once the water is cool, lift out the solidified wax disc with a spoon or your fingers.
Disposing of the wax:
-
Wrap the removed wax in paper or newspaper and place it in your regular household waste bin. Soy wax is biodegradable and non-toxic, it is safe to dispose of in general waste.
-
Never pour liquid or melted wax down a drain, sink, or toilet. Wax solidifies in pipes as it cools and will cause blockages. This applies to all wax, including soy wax.
-
Do not pour wax into soil in large quantities as it can affect drainage, though small amounts of soy wax are generally considered environmentally benign.
After removing the wax: Clean the inside of the jar with a small amount of dish soap and warm water. Dry thoroughly.
How to Safely Discard a Broken Glass Jar
If your COSLIGN candle jar breaks or cracks whether in transit, during use, or after the candle is finished please follow these guidelines for safe disposal.
Step 1- Do not pick up broken glass with bare hands. If the jar has shattered, do not attempt to collect the pieces with unprotected hands. Use thick rubber gloves, tongs, or a folded newspaper to handle any broken pieces.
Step 2- Contain the glass. Place all broken pieces into a thick bag a double-layered plastic bag or a paper bag placed inside a plastic bag is ideal. Do not use a thin bag that glass can pierce through.
Step 3- Label the bag. Write "BROKEN GLASS- SHARP" on the outside of the bag with a marker before placing it in the bin. This protects waste collection workers from injury.
Step 4- Dispose in a rigid container if possible. For added safety, place the sealed bag inside a rigid container such as an empty cardboard box or an old tin before placing it in the waste bin.
Step 5- Check your local waste guidelines. In many Indian cities, glass is categorised as dry waste. Check your local municipal corporation's waste segregation guidelines for your city. Some areas have glass recycling facilities.
If wax is still inside the broken jar: Allow the wax to solidify fully if it is liquid. Remove the wax using the methods described above before disposing of the glass separately.
Soot and Black Smoke- What It Means
If you notice black smoke or soot coming from your candle, it is almost always caused by one of the following:
-
The wick has not been trimmed- trim to 6mm immediately and extinguish then relight
-
There is a draft in the room- move the candle or close the window
-
The candle has been burning for more than 4 hours- extinguish and allow to rest
A properly trimmed wick, still environment, and a soy wax candle should produce a clean, even flame with minimal or no visible smoke.
